(LSGMI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to equal justice for Miami-Dade and Monroe County residents, have successfully overturned a decision that would have removed an elderly man from the Miami-Dade Public Housing Section 8 waiting list. 80-year-old Manuel Parga contacted LSGMI for help because he was taken off the waiting list when it was discovered that he had a 1982 bench warrant for a misdemeanor nose studs petit theft of an 89-cent candy bar. This case was very unusual and heartbreaking, so we responded right away, said Marcia Cypen, LSGMI Executive Director. Over the years we have seen numerous clients denied nose studs housing assistance because of their criminal background, but this case was extreme. Criminal defense attorney and LSGMI Board member Eddie Pereira represented Manuel in his criminal case on a pro bono basis. He was successful in having the warrant set aside and the criminal case dismissed. After the court s ruling, LSGMI attorney Alejandra nose studs Aguilera was able to get the housing nose studs authority to reverse their decision. Parga now remains on the waiting list with the hope of one day living in Section 8 housing. We would like to thank Eddie and Alejandra for their swift action, said Cypen. Their professionalism made all of the difference in Mr. Parga s life.
